How to Set Custom Names on Life360
Life360 makes it easy to rename your Places. Any changes you make are visible to everyone in your Circle.
- Open PlacesTap the ‘Places’ button at the bottom of the main map screen.
- Select a PlaceChoose the location you want to rename, like ‘Home’ or ‘Work’.
- Open the MenuTap the three dots in the top right corner of the Place details screen.
- Edit and SaveSelect ‘Edit Place’ from the menu. Type your new funny name and tap ‘Save’.
Now when you arrive or leave, your friends will get a notification with the new, much funnier name.
How to Set Custom Names on Find My Friends
Apple’s Find My app (the one that replaced Find My Friends) also lets you label locations, but it works differently from Life360.
You can label your own significant locations, or you can create a custom label for a friend’s location that only you can see.
Labeling Your Own Location (Home, Work, etc.)
- Go to the ‘Me’ TabOpen the Find My app and tap on the ‘Me’ tab in the bottom right.
- Find LocationsScroll down to the ‘My Locations’ section.
- Edit Location NameTap on ‘Home,’ ‘Work,’ or ‘School’ and then choose ‘Edit Location Name.’
- Set Your LabelEnter your custom name and save it. This will now be your label for that address across your Apple devices.
Labeling a Friend’s Location (Only for You)
- Go to the ‘People’ TabOpen Find My and select the friend whose location you want to label.
- Open InfoTap the small ‘i’ (info) icon next to their name on the map details.
- Edit Location NameTap ‘Edit Location Name.’
- Choose or Create a LabelYou can pick a default like ‘Home’ or ‘Work’ or scroll to the bottom and tap ‘Add Custom Label’ to type your own.
This label is private to you. Your friend won’t see that you’ve renamed their house ‘The Batcave’ on your phone.
It’s a great way to keep track of different friends’ houses with names only you will get. If you need to share your location between iPhone and Android, you’ll need an app like Life360.
Where Bobble Fits: Status Without Locations
If you want to feel close without sharing your exact spot on a map, Bobble is one of the best alternatives to location-sharing apps. It shows your friends what you’re up to, not where you are.
Your crew appears as 3D bobbleheads you make from a selfie, living at the top of your phone with a status like ‘at the gym’ or ‘asleep.’ It’s a way to stay connected that feels more private than a map.
Best for: A close crew who wants to feel together without a feed. Watch out: The live status in the Bobble Dynamic Island feature needs an iPhone 14 Pro or newer. Also, Bobble is still in beta, so it is not on the App Store yet.
