Games like IMVU that are still alive

Make my Bobble

Most lists of IMVU alternatives are years old and full of dead links. This one is checked against 2026, including what shut down.

Updated September 30, 2026By the Bobble team

IMVU is still running in 2026, but a lot has changed around it. Rec Room shut down in June, Pocket Worlds bought Hotel Hideaway in September, and VRChat now runs on phones. So most "games like IMVU" lists you'll find, many written back in 2022, point you to the wrong places.

We checked every pick in September 2026: is it live, what platforms, what it costs, and how the App Store rates it. They're sorted by how close they feel to IMVU's mix of 3D avatars, fashion and chat rooms. Full disclosure: we make Bobble, and it's on this list. We tell you who each app fits, including when it's not us.

  1. 1

    Highrise

    Pocket Worlds

The most active mobile-first IMVU alternative

iPhone, Android, Windows, MacFree, in-app purchases

Highrise is the closest thing to IMVU built for your phone. You dress a 3D avatar from a massive catalog with weekly drops, then hang out in rooms made by other players, with free voice chat. Trading rare items is a big part of the game, and there are pets, minigames and room design on top. It runs on computers through Steam too. It fits IMVU fans who want the same fashion-and-rooms loop with a younger, busier crowd.

Watch out: The App Store rates it 16+ and Highrise suggests 17+, and rare items get expensive fast.

    Avakin Life

    Lockwood Publishing

A realistic 3D virtual life with a home to decorate

iPhone, Android, PC (Steam)Free, in-app purchases, optional VIP

Avakin Life is a 3D life sim: create an avatar, dress it in thousands of outfits, decorate your home, and go to parties, contests and weekly events. Its avatars look close to IMVU's grown-up style. Lockwood Publishing said in March 2026 that the game passed 500 million lifetime downloads and 1.6 million monthly players, and it left early access on Steam in May 2026. It fits people who want the IMVU look with more to do between chats.

Watch out: A lot of the best items and homes are behind VIP (from $4.99 a month on iPhone) or paid gems.

  3. 3

    Second Life

    Linden Lab

The deepest, most grown-up virtual world

Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android (mobile in beta)Free, optional Premium

Second Life is the original virtual world, and nothing else is as big or as open. Everything is made by residents: clothes, avatars, clubs, whole regions. You can own land, run a shop and earn money. The full experience is on a computer, while the free mobile app (still in public beta in 2026) is good for chatting and changing outfits on the go. It fits adults who liked IMVU's creator economy and want much more of it.

Watch out: You have to be 16 to join, many regions are 18+ only, and the desktop viewer has a real learning curve.

  4. 4

    Zepeto

    NAVER Z

    Cute K-style 3D avatars and photo-ready outfits

iPhone, AndroidFree, in-app purchases, optional Premium

Zepeto swaps IMVU's realistic look for cute, K-pop style 3D avatars. You dress up, take photos and videos, livestream as your avatar, and hang out in worlds that players build with ZEPETO Studio. Brand collabs and seasonal events come often. It's rated 13+ on the App Store, lower than IMVU. It fits younger players who care about styling and content more than long chat sessions. See our list of apps like Zepeto if that style is your thing.

Watch out: Premium ($3.99 a month on iPhone) and paid ZEMs unlock a lot of the closet, and the vibe is less about deep conversation.

  5. 5

    Hotel Hideaway

    Pocket Worlds

Fashion, room design and dance battles in 3D

iPhone, Android, PC (Steam)Free, in-app purchases, optional VIP

Hotel Hideaway is a 3D social world built around fashion: dress your avatar, decorate rooms, collect rare items and compete on fashion, interior and dance battle leaderboards. It came to Steam in October 2025, and in September 2026 Pocket Worlds (the Highrise team) bought it from Sulake. GamesBeat reported about 32 million registered users and roughly 300,000 monthly players. It fits IMVU fans who like a smaller, events-driven community.

Watch out: The US App Store rates it 18+, and changes may come as it moves to its new owner.

    VRChat

    VRChat Inc.

Any avatar you can imagine, in player-made worlds

iPhone, Android, PC, Meta Quest and other VR headsetsFree, optional VRChat+

VRChat is IMVU's chat rooms turned up to eleven. There are hundreds of thousands of player-made worlds and millions of avatars, with voice chat everywhere. Since October 2025 it runs on iPhone and Android, so you don't need a headset, and phone, PC and VR players share the same rooms. It fits people who want to talk, hang out and explore more than they want to shop for clothes.

Watch out: Your phone needs at least 6 GB of RAM, and public rooms can be loud and chaotic.

    Visit VRChat ↗
  7. 7

    Habbo

    Sulake

Old-school pixel hotel rooms and roleplay

Windows, Mac, iPhone, AndroidFree, in-app purchases

Habbo is a pixel-art hotel where you chat, decorate rooms, roleplay and join games and competitions. It's one of the oldest avatar chat games still running, and it was still getting updates in September 2026. The pixel style is the opposite of IMVU's 3D, but the core idea is the same: make a room, invite people, talk. It fits people who want a nostalgic, room-and-chat community without 3D graphics.

Watch out: It's 2D pixel art, and outside peak hours some rooms feel quiet.

    Bobble

    We make this

Your real friends as avatars, not strangers

iPhone and Android (coming soon), web bobblehead maker todayFree

Bobble isn't a chat room and there are no strangers, so it's not a straight IMVU replacement. It's for the part of IMVU you might actually miss: dressing up an avatar and hanging with your people. Your real friends become 3D bobbleheads made from selfies. You dress yours in the fitting room, send one-tap Bobbles (fire, kiss, slap, wave), and chat with text, photos and voice notes. On iPhone your crew sits in the Dynamic Island. You can make your bobblehead now on the web.

Watch out: The app is still coming soon, and there are no rooms, worlds or new people to meet, only friends you add.

    Roblox

    Roblox Corporation

Roleplay games with an avatar and a big shop

iPhone, Android, PC, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation, Meta QuestFree, in-app purchases, optional Premium

Roblox isn't a chat world like IMVU, but its roleplay games scratch the same itch: towns, houses, jobs and hangouts, with an avatar you dress from a huge shop. It runs on almost everything, from phones to consoles, and has millions of player-made games to jump between. It fits friends who want to play something together, and younger teens who find IMVU's crowd a bit too old for them.

Watch out: Since January 2026 chat requires a facial age check, and you mostly talk with people near your age.

    Everskies

    Pocket Worlds

Styling and designing clothes for a pixel doll

    Web, iPhone, AndroidFree, in-app purchases

Everskies is for the IMVU players who spend more time in the shop than in chat. You style a pixel doll avatar from more than 150,000 items, many made by players, and you can design and sell your own. Outfit competitions ran all through 2026, plus clubs, forums and chat rooms. It's run by Pocket Worlds, the Highrise team. It fits fashion lovers who want a creative community more than 3D rooms.

Watch out: Avatars are 2D, and the phone app hasn't been updated on the App Store since 2024, so the website works best.

How we picked these IMVU alternatives

We looked for avatar chat games that do at least one IMVU thing well: dressing a 3D avatar, hanging out in rooms, or making and selling items. In September 2026 we checked each official site and App Store page for platforms, price model and age rating, and read 2025 and 2026 news for shutdowns and sales. Anything that closed got cut. Nobody paid to be here, and Bobble is the only app we have a stake in.

What happened to Rec Room (and other changes in 2026)

If an older list sent you to Rec Room, that one is gone. Rec Room announced at the end of March 2026 that it couldn't make the business profitable, and its servers went offline on June 1, 2026. Once valued at $3.5 billion, it had cut staff twice in 2025.

Tips for trying a new avatar chat game

Questions people ask

What is the best game like IMVU?

Highrise is the closest match in 2026: a 3D avatar, a giant fashion catalog, player rooms and voice chat, on phone and computer. Avakin Life is a good pick for a realistic 3D life, and Second Life is the deepest option if you're 16 or older and play on a computer.

Is IMVU still active in 2026?

Yes. IMVU is still live on the web, desktop, iPhone and Android, with VIP plans and a creator-made catalog. It runs monthly themes, outfit challenges and events, and it published a new lineup of events for September 2026. The App Store rates it 16+.

Is there an IMVU alternative for under 18?

IMVU and Highrise allow 13-year-olds but are rated 16+ on the App Store. Zepeto, Avakin Life, Habbo, VRChat, Roblox and Everskies are rated 13+. Second Life needs you to be 16, and Hotel Hideaway is rated 18+. Bobble is for ages 13+ and only connects you with friends you add.

Is Rec Room shutting down?

Rec Room already shut down. It announced the closure at the end of March 2026, stopped new sign-ups, and took its servers offline on June 1, 2026. Its team said costs always ended up bigger than the money the game brought in. VRChat and Roblox are the closest things still running.

What are the best virtual world games on mobile?

On phones, Highrise, Avakin Life, Zepeto and Hotel Hideaway are built for mobile first. VRChat now runs on iPhone and Android too, if your phone has at least 6 GB of RAM. Second Life has a free mobile app, but it's still in beta and works best as a companion to the computer version.

Can I move my IMVU avatar or credits to another game?

No. IMVU credits, outfits and rooms stay in IMVU, and no other game on this list imports them. You'll start fresh wherever you go, so play the free version first and only spend once you know you'll stay.
