"No Location Found" on Find My means Apple's servers cannot reach your friend's iPhone to pull their current GPS coordinates. This usually happens when their phone loses cellular signal, runs out of battery, enters Airplane Mode, or has Location Services turned off. Here is how to tell whose phone is causing the error.

Find My Friends is now part of the Find My app
If you search for Find My Friends on your iPhone, you will not find a separate app anymore. Apple merged Find My Friends and Find My iPhone into a single app called Find My. Everything runs through the People tab at the bottom of the screen.
When you tap a friend’s name, their card pops up. Normally you see a map pin. When things go wrong, Find My drops a gray status line under their name instead. The exact words on that line tell you what is happening.
“No Location Found” vs “Location Not Available”
People mix them up constantly, but they point to different causes.
| Status | What it means | Likely cause | Who can fix it |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Location Found | Apple cannot reach the phone right now to get fresh coordinates. | Poor cell service, dead battery, phone switched off, or Airplane Mode. | Your friend (when they reconnect) |
| Location Not Available | The system cannot provide location data for this contact at all. | Friend stopped sharing, disabled Share My Location, or Apple server outage. | Your friend or Apple |
| Live | Real-time streaming location updates as the person moves. | Find My is active with a strong 5G, LTE, or Wi-Fi connection. | Working as intended |
| Now | A fresh location fix gathered within the last few seconds. | Standard location update on a stable cellular network. | Working as intended |
| Timestamp (e.g., 25m ago) | Stale location data showing where the phone was last detected. | Device lost connection or paused background GPS to save power. | Friend (needs fresh signal) |
“No Location Found” is usually temporary.
It means the system knows you have permission to see the location, but the device is unreachable. “Location Not Available” often means permission was revoked or the sharing link broke entirely.
What does “Live” mean on Find My?
When you open Find My and see green text that says “Live” next to a small pulsing icon, you are getting real-time streaming updates. Instead of pinging the phone every couple of minutes, the device streams its GPS coordinates continuously.
Live updates kick in when both phones have strong internet connections and your friend is actively moving, so you can watch their circle slide down the street in real time, much like the turn-by-turn navigation you see in Apple Maps.
If the person stops moving or background updates slow down to preserve battery, “Live” switches back to “Now”. A few minutes later, it turns into a timestamp showing how long ago the phone sent data.
Why it happens: the 6 most common causes
When Find My displays “No Location Found”, the issue usually splits across three buckets: your friend’s physical phone, your friend’s settings, or your own device.
1. Your friend’s phone has no signal or ran out of battery
GPS chips can find satellites anywhere, but an iPhone needs cellular data or Wi-Fi to send those coordinates back to Apple. If your friend enters a subway station, a rural dead zone, or a basement, the phone goes dark, and the same thing happens the moment their battery hits zero.
2. Airplane Mode is turned on
Flipping on Airplane Mode cuts cellular radios and Wi-Fi instantly. When that happens, the iPhone stops checking in with Apple’s location servers. Find My will show their last known spot for a short window, then switch to “No Location Found”.
3. Location Services or Share My Location was turned off
Your friend might have turned off Location Services to save battery. Or they might have toggled off “Share My Location” inside the Find My settings.
Sharing across platforms brings its own permission quirks. Our guide on how to share location between iPhone and Android covers how other systems handle sharing permissions.
4. Date and time mismatch on either device
Find My uses time-stamped security tokens to verify location requests. If your friend’s iPhone (or yours) has a manual clock set even a few minutes off, the tokens fail. The servers reject the connection and return an error status.
5. Your own phone has network trouble
Sometimes your friend’s phone is sending coordinates perfectly, but your phone cannot download them. A glitchy Wi-Fi network, weak cell coverage, or an active VPN can prevent your Find My app from loading the map data.
6. Temporary Apple server glitch
Apple runs massive server farms to handle Find My requests. Occasionally, iCloud services run into downtime or synchronization delays.
You can check Apple’s System Status page to see if Find My or Apple Account services have yellow warning flags.
How to fix Find My Friends not working
Rule out the boring causes before you assume your friend turned location off on purpose. Start with your own phone.
Checks to make on your iPhone
- Check your connection. Turn Wi-Fi off and test over cellular, or switch Airplane Mode on and off to reset your radios.
- Set Date and Time to automatic. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time. Ensure “Set Automatically” is green.
- Restart your iPhone. A quick restart clears cached location tokens and re-establishes fresh network connections.
- Check Location Services. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Make sure the main toggle is on and Find My is set to “While Using the App”.
Checks your friend can make on their iPhone
If your device is working fine, ask your friend to verify these three settings on their end:
- Verify Share My Location is enabled. In the Find My app, tap the “Me” tab at the bottom. Make sure “Share My Location” is switched on.
- Check the active device. In that same “Me” tab, look at the line that says “Share Location From”. Make sure it says “This Device” and not an old iPad sitting on a desk at home.
- Reset network connection. Have them toggle Airplane Mode on for ten seconds, then turn it back off to re-register with local cell towers.
If the error persists after both of you check your settings, stop sharing and restart it by having your friend tap your name in Find My, select “Stop Sharing My Location”, wait two minutes, and share it again.
What a friend sees when you share with them
Sharing your location is completely reciprocal and voluntary. When you share your location with a friend, they receive a notification. They can see your pin on the map, your approximate street address, and whether your phone is moving.
If you stop sharing, Apple does not send a loud push notification saying you cut them off. Instead, your pin disappears from their map. The label under your name changes to “Location Not Available” or “No location found”. If you completely remove them from your list, your name disappears from their People tab altogether.
When a map pin is more than you need
Constant GPS tracking feels like overkill. Most of the time, you do not actually care about your friend’s exact street address or monitoring their commute turn by turn. You just want to know if your crew is awake, stuck in class, hitting the gym, or free to hang out.
That is why we made Bobble. Instead of putting you on a satellite map, Bobble turns you and your close friends into 3D bobbleheads made from a single selfie. Your bobbleheads hang out right at the top of your screen in your Dynamic Island or Lock Screen widget. Statuses update automatically to show what everyone is doing, like “gym”, “coffee”, or “asleep”, without broadcasting your private street address.

You get all the social connection of knowing what your group chat is doing throughout the day, without the awkwardness of full-time GPS tracking.
Questions people ask
What does "No Location Found" mean on Find My?
It means Apple's servers cannot establish a connection with your friend's iPhone to get their current coordinates. This usually happens when their phone runs out of battery, enters an area with no cell reception, is turned off, or has Airplane Mode turned on.
What does "Live" mean on Find My?
"Live" means your friend's iPhone is actively streaming real-time GPS coordinates over a high-speed cellular or Wi-Fi connection. You can watch their pin move smoothly on the map as they walk or drive, rather than waiting for periodic updates.
Why does Find My say "Location Not Available" for a friend?
"Location Not Available" usually means the system cannot fetch location data at all. This happens if your friend turned off Share My Location in their settings, stopped sharing with you specifically, or if there is a synchronization error between your Apple Accounts.
Why is Find My Friends not working?
Find My can fail due to poor cell service, disabled Location Services, incorrect Date & Time settings, or an outdated iOS version. To fix it, toggle Airplane Mode, restart both phones, and make sure Share My Location is enabled under the Me tab.
Make your own Bobble
Snap a selfie and meet your 3D bobblehead in about 30 seconds. Free, and it will be waiting in the app on launch day.
