Before you start: turn on Location Services and Share My Location in Settings
If either setting is off, sharing buttons stay greyed out or fail to load.
- Open SettingsTap Privacy & Security at the bottom of the first main block.
- Turn on Location ServicesTap Location Services at the very top and make sure the green slider is active.
- Enable Share My LocationTap Location Services, select Share My Location, and toggle Share My Location to on.
Check that your iPhone is set as the active device sharing your spot. Under Settings > Apple Account > Find My, you should see ‘This iPhone’ listed next to ‘My Location’.
Method 1: Share your location in Messages (iMessage) with one friend
Messages is the quickest route when you’re already making plans in a thread. Send a static pin or go live.
- Open your chatOpen the Messages app and tap the conversation with your friend.
- Tap the plus buttonTap the plus icon to the left of the text input field.
- Select LocationTap Location from the app drawer to load the interactive map preview.
- Choose pin or live shareTap ‘Send Pin’ for a static spot, or tap ‘Share’ and pick your duration.
Method 2: Share with Find My for a longer stretch (1 hour, until end of day, or indefinitely)
Find My suits ongoing background sharing with your closest crew. It updates continuously and never clutters your text threads with map cards.
- Open Find MyLaunch the Find My app on your iPhone and tap the People tab.
- Start sharingTap the plus button next to People, then tap Share My Location.
- Pick your friendType your friend’s name, phone number, or Apple ID contact card, then tap Send.
- Select a timerChoose Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day, or Share Indefinitely.
Method 3: Drop a pin from Maps for a one-time spot
Apple Maps shares an exact meeting point rather than your current coordinates, which helps when you want to show friends where to park or where the group is gathering later.
- Open Apple MapsSearch for your destination or press and hold any spot on the map to drop a pin.
- Open pin detailsSwipe up on the information card that appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap ShareTap the Share icon on the card to open the iOS share sheet.
- Send to your friendSelect your friend’s contact icon or choose Messages to send the exact link.
What your friend sees (and what they do not see)
When you share a live location, your friend sees your contact photo moving on a map inside Find My and Messages. They can view your approximate street address, your distance from them, and whether your phone is actively charging.
Your friend cannot see your search history, your screen, or who else you share with. Lose cell service or run out of battery, and Find My shows your last known spot with a timestamp.
If you see blank screens instead, our guide on No Location Found on Find My breaks down what causes it.
Which option fits which situation
Match your plan to a method below.
| Situation | Best Method | Duration | Shows Live Movement? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meeting at a venue | Maps Dropped Pin | One-time link | No |
| Walking home late | Messages Live Location | 1 Hour | Yes |
| Group trip or festival | Find My People Tab | Until End of Day | Yes |
| Best friend or partner | Find My People Tab | Indefinitely | Yes |
How to stop sharing your location (per person and for everyone)
You can turn off your location at any moment without deleting message threads or resetting your phone. Stopping takes effect instantly.
To cut sharing for one specific friend, open Find My, tap People, select their name, and tap Stop Sharing My Location. Alternatively, open your direct Messages thread, tap their profile icon at the top, and tap Stop Sharing.
To turn off sharing for everyone at once, open Settings, tap Privacy & Security > Location Services > Share My Location, and flip the Share My Location toggle off. Your personal GPS keeps running for navigation apps while external visibility drops to zero.
Troubleshooting: Share My Location greyed out, wrong location, and Android friends
A greyed-out sharing toggle usually means Screen Time restrictions are in the way. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services, and make sure changes are set to ‘Allow’.
If your location looks inaccurate or jumps across towns, your iPhone is probably leaning on distant cell towers. Turn Wi-Fi on even when you’re not connected to a network. Background Wi-Fi scanning helps your phone pin down precise city positions.
Mixed phone groups hit the limits of Apple’s built-in tools. If someone in the group chat uses an Android device, check our guide on how iPhone can share location with Android for setups that work across both operating systems.
A lighter way to show your friends what you’re up to: Bobble
Staring at a live GPS dot can feel intense when you only want to know if your friend is free. Most days you do not need an exact street address. You just want to know if they are at the gym, in class, or asleep.
Bobble offers a low-pressure setup for close friend groups. Instead of a map pin, you and your crew become 3D bobbleheads made from a single selfie. Your bobblehead sits at the top of your phone and updates with clear statuses like work, school, gym, party, or vibing to music.
Want quiet hours? Ghost Mode freezes your figure under a sheet. When you and a friend meet up in person within 150 meters, Together Mode automatically puts your bobbleheads head to head.
